Compositing for Visual Effects

Can the impossible be made believable?

This project proposed the task to combine a variety of original images to deliver four visual outcomes that make the un-believable... believable. The process involved experimenting with tools and different techniques in Photoshop between two or more images to deliver four distinct outcomes. The photographs utilised are all original to create a set of four new original images.

The Outcome

The final outcome for this project is a series of 4 images that have been composited from 2 or more original photographs to create a new distinct image. The images have been constructed using Photoshop, creating visually striking compositions. The series of 4 tiles explore themes of distortion, scale and unexpected juxtapositions. The overall outcome of each image demonstrates strong conceptual storytelling through digital manipulation, blending reality and imagination to challenge perceptions.

The Challenge

The task demands research led by curiosity. The principal objective of this project is to broaden an awareness of the possibilities of image compositing, followed by experimental
development toward new, entirely original images.

The Process

I began by conducting visual research and consolidated this research into a mood board. This mood board served as a creative foundation, allowing to establish the tone, style and conceptual direction before getting into the final pieces of work. The sourced imagery features digital manipulation and surreal photography.

Creating this visual mood board assisted in speeding up the creative process as it provided a reference point during times of uncertainty as well as inspiring new ideas through experimentation and storytelling of images.

The experimental process of the images were created in Photoshop consistently utilising a layer mask to hide and show parts of an image as well as adjustment layers and filters to enhance the overall image and storytelling.
